Ailene woke to the feeling of being shaken, and when she opened her eyes, she could see her sister kneeling next to her. She had no idea how long she had been lying on the hallway floor, but she was immediately thankful Sally had found her. It took her several moments to figure out what was happening. It wasnât until she saw the paramedics standing a few feet away, along with a few other men who were moving boards away from the hallway, that she realized part of the ceiling had collapsed. She still had a sharp pain in her head, along with the memory of why she was running.
âYou should have never been out here in the middle of the night,â Sally said.
âWhat happened?â
âIâm not really sure why you were roaming the halls, but a quick storm rushed through the city, causing havoc. The lightning struck the house, and a couple of boards fell down and hit you on the head.â
âI vaguely remember lightning as I was headed back to the apartment, but then everything went dark.â
âMaybe next time you shouldnât go roaming down the hallway in the middle of the night. How are you feeling?â
Ailene shrugged. âI feel fine, really. Itâs just a few bumps and scratches. Nothing I havenât been through before.â
âYou need to go to the hospital and get checked out. You might have a concussion or internal bleeding.â
âWhat? No, I feel perfectly fine.â
The paramedic chuckled. âYeah, she is going to be fine. Thereâs not any bruising around the scratch on her head, but I still have to agree with your sister. It might be best to get a doctorâs opinion, just in case.â
âSee, even he thinks you need to go to the hospital.â
Ailene continued to try to talk them out of taking her to the hospital, but in the end, her sisterâs persistence won. The paramedics quickly loaded her onto a gurney and carried her down the steps. She was somewhat embarrassed by the fact that the paramedics had to be involved over something as simple as getting hit in the head. Overall, as she thought about the situation and what had occurred, she knew it was in their best interest to get checked out by doctors at the hospital, even if she wasnât happy about the situation.
A few minutes later, they were finally loading her into the back of the ambulance, and her sister climbed in alongside her. Although she knew she needed to get checked out properly, Ailene was still embarrassed by how big of a deal they were making it out to be. When they finally had her strapped into the back of the ambulance and were just about to leave, she looked up at Sally to see her sister glaring at her.
âWhy are you looking at me like that?â
âIâm just trying to figure out what the hell you were doing out in the hallway in the middle of the night.â
Ailene shrugged. âI heard a scratching noise coming from outside of the apartment.
